Global Design Language System

When I started at Discovery, there was no shared Design Language System for different apps, regions, and languages. As the head of Global Product & Design, we needed a solution that would work for various applications and easily scale worldwide. While creating a new set of apps, websites, and connected systems, I led a team of designers to develop a flexible Design Language that could adapt to any product or platform. This effort enabled our teams to include branding, partnerships, and other forms of communication.

An intuitive language that communicates with customers around the globe, and increases our ability to deliver incredible experiences.
— Shawn Johnson

The User Interface, Copy and Language across screens, surfaces and viewports can vary broadly. The Global DLS was designed with flexibility, translation and localization in mind to ensure that the product experience was not only useable and useful, but delightful for our customers.

The Discovery+ Design Language System serves as a key tool and reference for teams worldwide to easily create new screens, interactions, and features. Its success spread beyond Discovery+, becoming a best practice guide for the entire company and all other brands.
